Make Your Own Colour Changing Clouds

A simple DIY hack for a whimsical design

Whimsical Colour Changing Clouds

After yet another military move I really wanted to make my daughters’ rooms feel special and make them feel instantly at home in our new place. They each came up with their own theme. The littles (who share a room) wanted rainbows and unicorns. I knew it wasn’t going to be complete without some whimsical clouds for their high ceilings. A Quick Look online and my tight wallet knew I could make them myself and better! So here are my creations and it was such a surprisingly easy project and the results were amazing. The girls love their clouds and even better they have a remote control that can change colours any time they want! what could be better?

Difficulty Meter: EASY

Supplies Needed:

Tip: You can easily swap colours or hanging decor to customize this project!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Make The Cloud
Follow the paper lantern instructions and put them together. I would pull apart some of your stuffing before you start, so it looks light and fluffy and is not so dense. Then, start at one end of the paper lantern with a hot glue gun and work in small sections, making little squiggle lines and then sticking the whispy cotton to it. Keep going around until the entire ball is covered.

Step 2: Attach The Light & Decoration
If you bought the same LED lights as here, then there is a little cut out you can string a thread through, then tie it around the bar on the lantern that you want to be the top of your cloud. make sure it’s secure and then drop the LED light into the center of the lantern where it will hang.

Next, attach any hanging decorations you want on your cloud like these shimmering garlands I found, or anything else you like! I simply tied them onto the bottom bar of the paper lantern and then made them the desired length. My children’s room has a high ceiling so I played with the length and made them different lengths to add to the look.

Step 3: Add a tie to hang
I had white pipe cleaners on hand and they worked perfectly for this. I just bent them in half, slipped over the top bar of the paper lantern and then secured it shut. Depending where you’re wanting to hang your clouds you could hang them on hooks, nails, railings or I used little thumb tacks and stuck them into the ceiling.

Step 4: Hang and admire!
